Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Va., has won an endorsement from a national progressive group in the race for Virginia governor, which will also work with his campaign to train volunteers and raise funds.
"Tom Perriello has the backbone to fight back against Trump's assault on our rights and values, and push for a bold progressive agenda that will tangibly improve the lives of all Virginians," Progressive Change Campaign Committee cofounder Stephanie Taylor told The Hill.
Taylor worked on Perriello's congressional campaign in 2008, and referenced the recent special election in Georgia, saying Democrat "Jon Ossoff's first-place finish . . . shows that the intense anti-Trump grassroots fervor isn't going anywhere. PCCC will be funneling that energy into Perriello's campaign, which could be the biggest Resistance victory in the states in 2017 — impacting the grassroots energy and political wisdom going into 2018."
Perriello recently won the support of Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Gold Star Muslim parents who rose to prominence during the previous presidential campaign. The congressman represented the Khans' district from 2009 to 2011.
"Resisting President [Donald] Trump and defeating the hate and bigotry that he sows will take people of conviction and good conscience standing up and fighting back. Tom Perriello is one of those people," the Khans said in a statement given to The Washington Post by Perriello's campaign.
"We support Tom Perriello for governor and will be voting for him in June, because he will fiercely resist the unconstitutional actions of President Trump, while advancing an inclusive Virginia that welcomes all."
