The largest newspaper in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District has endorsed Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch over former GOP Gov. Mark Sanford.
The Post and Courier of Charleston calls Colbert Busch someone who will work with members of both parties to get the country's fiscal house in order with spending cuts, tax reform and by eliminating waste and fraud.
"But it won't require opposing federal initiatives that will benefit the 1st District in terms of infrastructure, port improvements, university research and development, and job creation," the endorsement reads.
Colbert Busch notes that Sens. Ernest F. "Fritz" Hollings, a Democrat, and Strom Thurmond, a Republican, both sought fiscally prudent government without making it a detriment to their state of South Carolina, the newspaper said.
"Ms. Colbert Busch offers a balanced alternative to her GOP opponent Mark Sanford," the paper says, noting that the former governor held the 1st District seat himself for a self-limited three terms.
The paper described Sanford's two terms as governor as "marred by near-constant conflict with his fellow Republicans who ran the Legislature."
The endorsement called Colbert Bush "a welcome tonic" for those in the state suffering from "Sanford Fatigue — a malady caused by overexposure to all of the cringe-worthy details of his 2009 disgrace as governor, his ongoing efforts for redemption via the political process, his resurgent personal problems, etc."
The paper isn't your typical liberal daily, either. The Post and Courier has endorsed staunch tea party Republicans like Sen. Tim Scott and back Mitt Romney over President Obama in 2012
During Sanford's last term as governor, he was caught up in a sex scandal involving a mistress from Argentina and he separated from his wife. He has recently faced allegations from his ex-wife that he had entered her home without her permission to be with their children.
Colbert Busch is the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert. She and Sanford are in a neck and neck race and will meet in a special election on Tuesday to fill the seat vacated by Republican Scott, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate.
