President Barack Obama will attend a fundraiser for gay and lesbian supporters today, an event that comes at a very dicey time for the president when it comes to his stance on gay issues, Politico reports.

The New York state legislature is approaching a vote on gay marriage, and Obama hasn’t taken a stand on the issue yet, though supporters of the idea say his views are evolving toward it.

Obama may wish the issue would disappear, but it will be pretty tough for him to avoid it all together at the fundraiser. He likely will address it briefly, stressing his support for civil unions and repeating his long-held position that states possess the authority to pass whatever laws they want, according to an individual familiar with the White House’s thinking.
