White House press secretary Jay Carney announced Thursday that President Obama is planning to meet with top Republican and Democratic Congressional leaders to discuss budget issues, Politico reports.

The pow-wow would most likely take place at the White House sometime next week, although Carney gave no hint of a date or a location.

Earlier in the day, the GOP released a video chastising Obama for his willingness to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin over issues regarding Syria but could find neither the time nor inclination to sit down with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to hash out a budget deal.

Obama is due in New York at the beginning of the week for the United Nations General Assembly and an appearance with former President Bill Clinton at an event at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting on Tuesday.

Obama has taken a hit for his failure to begin a serious dialogue with GOP leaders to find ways to prevent both a government shutdown on Oct. 1 and a breach of the nation’s debt limit shortly thereafter.

Although any proposed meeting between Obama and Congressional leaders would be a positive sign, some Republicans see a high-profile White House meeting as nothing more than a move to appease the president’s critics.

“They always do a photo op after getting blasted for their failure to work with Congress,” said one GOP source on Capitol Hill.

“It gets you people to back off for a while.”
