Fox News Poll: Obama's Job Approval Tanks Below 50 Percent

Wednesday, 24 Jul 2013 10:34 PM

By Paul Scicchitano

The president’s job approval rating remains below 50 percent while a majority of American voters are dissatisfied with the direction the country is heading, according to a new Fox News poll released on Wednesday.

“Overall, 46 percent of voters approve of Obama’s job performance, while 47 percent disapprove,” Fox reported. “That’s a slight improvement from last month when headlines trumpeted the IRS targeting of conservative groups, the NSA spying on Americans and the Justice Department monitoring journalists. At that time 43 percent approved and 51 percent disapproved.

Some 44 percent of voters believe the president made the economy worse while 43 percent say he helped it.

What’s more, a clear majority of Americans say they haven’t seen evidence that the economy is on the mend.

“A 57-percent majority says they don’t see any signs the economy has started to turn the corner, while 38 percent say they feel the worst is over,” Fox reported. “Those views are little changed from a year ago.”

Overall, Democrats were three times as likely as Republicans to be happy with the direction of the country. Only 25 percent of independents gave the president’s job performance a thumb’s up as compared with 31 percent in June, the findings revealed.

“It continues to be a summer of discontent with Congress: 18 percent of voters approve of the job lawmakers are doing, while 74 percent disapprove,” Fox noted. “Last month 15 percent approved and 77 percent disapproved (June 22-24). Approval of Congress hit a record-low 10 percent in August 2011.”
