Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., shut down talk of gun control legislation in the wake of the nation's worst mass killing, Politico reported.

"The investigation has not even been completed," McConnell said when asked if could support banning the conversion of semi-automatic guns to automatic guns — a bill being written by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

"I think it's premature to be discussing legislative solutions, if there are any," he said, Politico reported, adding: "at the end of [an investigation of the Las Vegas killings] there will be an appropriate time to discuss that."

"It's particularly inappropriate to politicize an event like this," McConnell said of the slaughter of 59 people at a concert Sunday night. "It just happened within the last day and half. Entirely premature to be discussing about legislative solutions if any."

"In the meantime, our priority is on tax reform," he told reporters. "We're going to move ahead with that in the budget committee this week, and it will be out on the floor after recess."

Earlier Tuesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., also deflected questions about gun control, saying the House has not scheduled a vote on a bill to loosen restrictions on gun silencers.
