Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell got into the holiday spirit this week by airing a clever twist on a Christmas poem that would lead viewers to think President Barack Obama should receive a lump of coal in his stocking.

"Twas the night before Christmas four years ago," McConnell says in the advertisement. "Liberals wanted Obamacare, but Kentucky said no."

The one-minute spot also targets the president for high spending, expanded debt, and an issue that is critical in McConnell's state of Kentucky: the "war on coal."

The Republican also hits at Obama's support of Democratic candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes in the midterm election next fall.

"So Obama wondered, 'Who's my Kentucky candidate for these times?' And guess who it goes to? Alison Lundergan Grimes," McConnell says as the theme from "The Nutcracker" plays in the background.

"The differences are stark, and your choice will be clear, but you'll make your decision in November next year. So Merry Christmas and happy holidays to Kentuckians all. Especially Alison Lundergan Grimes, I'll see you next fall."

Grimes is Kentucky's secretary of state. Her spokeswoman, Charly Norton, said McConnell's "insurmountable disapproval ratings" spoke for themselves.
