An internal poll for tea-party backed Senate contender Chris McDaniel shows him with an 8-point lead over Mississippi incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran as the closely watched GOP primary runoff campaign heads into its final two weeks.

The campaign for McDaniel, a state senator who bested Cochran by a whisper-thin margin June 6 primary —  but failed to hit the 50 percent needed to be declared a winner —  released a Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research survey Wednesday showing the challenger with 49 percent support among likely runoff voters, compared with Cochran's 41 percent.

The WPA poll breakdown also found McDaniel's support strongest among "very conservative" voters —  60 percent compared with Cochran's 31 percent. The challenger polled 49-43 percent among "strong Republican" voters, and 51-39 percent among independents. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

The polling is the latest to put McDaniel ahead of Cochran before the June 24 runoff election.

A Chism Strategies poll found McDaniel leads Cochran 50.6 percent to 47.6 percent, just inside the poll’s 3.3 percent margin of error.

Another poll from Strategic National shows McDaniel with a six-point lead, 52 percent to Cochran’s 46 percent, according to figures released by the McDaniel campaign.

However, Politico notes the Strategic National poll found that, despite McDaniel’s lead, voters have a more positive view of Cochran than they do of McDaniel, with Cochran's favorable rating 58-26 percent, and McDaniel's 53-32 percent.

The Mississippi race, described before the contentious June 6 primary as one of the nastiest midterm battles in the nation —  marred by scandal and mud-slinging —  continues to hold the national attention in the wake of veteran House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's primary defeat Tuesday by grassroots challenger Dave Brat.
