House Intelligence Chairman Mike Rogers has endorsed former Michigan state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop to be the person to fill his shoes in Congress.

Rogers announced last month that he planned to retire at the end of this year and begin hosting a nationwide talk radio show on Cumulus Media, while saying he could have a “bigger voice” in Washington.

Now the Republican congressman has told MLive.com that Bishop, chief legal officer for International Bancard Corp., is the right “conservative leader” to take his seat.

“I believe Mike Bishop is the kind of conservative, results-oriented leader that will make the citizens of the 8th District proud,” Rogers said in a statement issued by the Bishop campaign.

“As a conservative leader, Mike Bishop shares my commitment for strong constituent service to the families in the 8th District. I fully support Mike Bishop for Congress.”

Bishop was elected to the state House in 1998 as a Republican before joining the Senate in 2002. He left the office in 2010 because of term limits, and then was beaten for the GOP attorney general nomination that same year, according to MLive.

In the GOP primary, Bishop will face Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, the only other Republican to have declared for the race so far.

Democrats Ken Darga and Susan Grettenberger had announced they were running for the seat before Rogers made his surprise retirement statement.
