Polls: NC's Hagan in Tight Race With Any GOP Contender

North Carolina Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan will definitely be in for a tight race against any of her possible Republican opponents, a poll released Wednesday showed.

The Time Warner poll found the first-term lawmaker’s approval at a weak 38 percent, compared with the 50 percent who don’t like the job she’s doing as she mounts a reelection campaign and fends off conservatives’ criticism of Obamacare.

The margin of error for the job-approval question was plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

The survey also found voters still undecided about the crowded GOP field, with a primary looming May 6.

Asked who they'd vote for in that race, voters gave Thom Tillis the most support with 23 percent; Greg Brannon came in next, with 15 percent; followed by Mark Harris, 11 percent; Heather Grant and Ted Alexander, both with 6 percent; Jim Snyder, 3 percent; Edward Kryn, 2 percent; and Alex Lee Bradshaw with 1 percent.

A significant chunk of voters, 34 percent, said they were undecided. The margin of error on that question was plus or minus 4.8 percentage points.

Still, when voters were asked how they’d vote for individual contenders against Hagan, Harris outgunned Hagan 47 percent to 43 percent; Brannon beat her 47 percent to 45 percent; Tillis polled 46 percent to Hagan’s 45 percent; Grant led 46 percent to her 44 percent; and Alexander had 46 percent to Hagan’s 44 percent.

The margin of error on that portion of the survey was plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Hagan has consistently struggled in the polls. In a survey taken last month by Public Policy Polling, any of her possible Republican opponents was within 2 points.

The poll found top Republican contenders Tillis and Brannon tied with 14 percent each.
