Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill has launched a new TV ad designed to convince voters that she is a moderate.

She may feel pressure from Republican challenger Rep. Todd Akin. While he suffered in initial polls after his controversial rape/abortion remarks last month, a public Policy Polling Survey conducted Aug. 28-29 shows him trailing McCaskill only 45 to 44 percent.

In the ad, McCaskill touts her position in ideology ratings compiled by National Journal.

“I’ve never been so proud to be ranked 50th,” she says. “All senators are ranked, 1 to 100, liberal to conservative. You’re looking at number 50.”

She then asks herself how she earned that slot. “Missouri-style independence: votes to cap federal spending, against more regulations, and eliminating earmarks,” the senator says. “I work across the aisle, and I don’t think compromise is a dirty word. That’s how we can solve problems for your family . . . Right in the middle is right for Missouri.”

McCaskill needs to bury her liberal image, given Missouri’s conservative bent. Real Clear Politics rates the race as leaning toward her.
