Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who received a lot of flak for choosing former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate in the 2008 presidential race, joked Wednesday that current GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney should do the same thing.
“I think it should be Sarah Palin,” McCain chuckled to CBS when asked about Palin’s comments Tuesday that the presidential nominee should choose someone “willing to go rogue” as the vice presidential candidate, Politico
reports. McCain said he hadn’t spoken to Palin about the issue.
On a more serious note, “I think that we have some very qualified candidates,” McCain said. “Obviously, [Florida Sen.] Marco Rubio is in the top tier, [New Jersey Gov.] Chris Christie. There are a number of candidates we have out there: [Louisiana Gov.] Bobby Jindal, [Indiana Gov.] Mitch Daniels. We have a wealth of talent right there, and I’m sure that Mitt will make the right choice.”
And what advice would McCain have for Romney (presuming he wins the nomination), when he makes his choice? “I think that I would obviously tell him . . . not to rush to judgment for one thing.”
McCain thinks Romney has wrapped up the nomination. “It’s clear that [Romney’s] the nominee,” the senator said.
