Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona will be the headliner at a high-dollar fundraising event for Gabriel Gomez, even though the Massachusetts Senate nominee donated to Barack Obama in 2008.

Gomez, who faces Democratic Rep. Ed Markey in the June 25 special election for the former seat of Secretary of State John Kerry, now says that while he donated to Obama in the primaries, he voted for McCain in the general election.

McCain will be the keynote speaker at the May 20 fundraising dinner at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston.

Gomez takes a moderate-to-liberal stand on most social issues and agrees with McCain on comprehensive immigration reform and on helping the Syrian rebels overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Another factor that may have helped convince the Arizonan to campaign for Gomez is that both are former U.S. Navy pilots.
