Out-of-state contributions have been a big boon to Democrat Elizabeth Warren’s U.S. Senate campaign in Massachusetts, but she still trails incumbent Republican Scott Brown in cash-on-hand, according to the Boston Globe.

In an analysis of a campaign finance database released Tuesday, the Globe found that Warren raised $5.7 million in the last quarter of 2011 to Brown’s $3.2 million. More than 61 percent of Warren’s money came from out of state, with 20 percent of that coming from California donors, and 13 percent from donors in New York.

But despite the infusion of out-of-state contributions, the Globe noted that Warren still trailed Brown in cash-on-hand at the end of the year with $6.1 million to his $12.9 million.

The Globe also reported that at least 66 percent of Brown’s contributions in the last quarter came from within the state. His biggest out-of-state donations came from Texas at 6.4 percent and New York at 6.2 percent.

Both candidates have been counting up the money for what could be the most expensive Senate race in the country this year as they try to win the seat that had been held by the late Edward M. Kennedy.

Brown took over the seat in a 2010 special election.
