One of the 20th Century’s great voting blocs — white Catholics — has crumbled and is no longer a force to be recognized, conservative author George J. Marlin claims.

The bloc that powered Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan and both Bushes to the White House has fallen apart, he wrote in an article for the website The Catholic Thing.

He said the group is dying out as younger Catholics abandon the faith and no longer vote as a bloc.

“The once solid Catholic vote is fractured beyond repair,” wrote Marlin, who stood as a Conservative/Right to Life candidate against Rudy Giuliani in New York City’s 1993 mayoral election.

“Millions of grandchildren and great grandchildren of those aging Catholics have abandoned their faith and embraced secularism. Fifty-seven percent of white cafeteria Catholics cast their ballots for Obama in 2012. An equal percentage of practicing Catholics voted for (GOP presidential candiate Mitt) Romney.”

Marlin says the presidential election was lost in heavily Catholic Rust Belt states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, saying Romney needed at least two of those states to win the White House.

“He lost them all because, in my judgment, practicing Catholic voters were not persuaded to come out in force.

"Thus ends a once great force in America’s electoral politics: white Catholic voters,” concludes Marlin. “What a pity.”
