A 51 percent majority of American voters lie in the middle of the political spectrum and share many of the same views, according to an Esquire/NBC News poll.

The survey found that more than 44 percent of these centrists don't think their positions and ideas are represented by either party.

Twenty-eight percent of them are Republicans, 36 percent Democrats, and 36 percent identify themselves as independents. Twenty percent call themselves liberals, 25 percent conservative, 55 percent moderate, and 15 percent identify themselves as tea party members.

On the issues, 59 percent of centrists think religion should have no role in politics, and 57 percent support ending affirmative action in hiring decisions and college admissions.

A resounding 76 percent say the United States should no longer act as the world’s policeman, 64 percent support gay marriage, and 63 percent believe in the right to an abortion for any reason during the first trimester.

The survey of 2,410 registered voters conducted Aug. 5-11 also found that 34 percent of these centrists live in a household with a gun, and 45 percent don't object to background checks for purchasing a firearm. A 90 percent majority also supports the death penalty.

As for who these centrists trust the most, President Barack Obama scored first with 9 percent support, followed by Oprah Winfrey with 6 percent and George W. Bush wish 2 percent.
