Liz Cheney's aborted Senate campaign in Wyoming exaggerated her fourth-quarter fundraising, and actually spent more than collected during that period, the National Journal reported Friday.

Citing Federal Election Commission filings, the National Journal reported the daughter of former President Dick Cheney began 2014 with $612,000 in the bank and $175,000 in debt compared with incumbent GOP Sen. Michael Enzi's $1.83 million cash on hand.

Cheney abandoned her challenge to Enzi Jan. 6 as polls showed her trailing badly.

According to the National Journal, FEC reports show Cheney raised just under $720,000 in the fourth quarter of 2013 while her campaign spent more than $900,000. The National Journal reported that Cheney told reporters she raised $1 million in that quarter.

The fourth-quarter figures contrast sharply with third-quarter fundraising, when Cheney raised just over $1 million and spent $232,000.

Cheney launched her longshot bid in July.

According to Politico, Cheney and members of her family, including her mother and former second lady Lynne Cheney, have reached out to major contributors to thank them in recent weeks.

“I think Liz hit a pause button on what is going to turn out to be a successful career," Jack Oliver, who served as finance vice chairman of the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign, told Politico earlier this month. "There are a lot of people who are loyal to this family. She’s not going anywhere. She’ll be back for another race, another day.”

But she'll first return money donors gave her failed campaign, Politico reported — though it'lll be less than the $2 million previously believed, the National Journal said.
