Katrina Pierson: Dems 'Definitely Obstructing' Trump's Nominees

Senate Democrats are "definitely obstructing" President Donald Trump's nominations for high-ranking government positions, former campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson said Tuesday.

"You know, Republicans are getting a real eye opener [about] what it means to be the opposition party," Pierson told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"Nearly every cabinet officer has been confirmed by now since [President Dwight D.] Eisenhower."

Pierson made her comments in response to an editorial in The Wall Street Journal Monday that complained that Senate Democrats have been abusing the Senate's rules to undermine the Trump presidency.

According to the publication, Trump "got an inexcusably slow start making nominations," but has been catching up. As of June 28, Trump had nominated 178 appointees, but the Senate has confirmed just 46.

In comparison, former President Barack Obama had 183 nominees confirmed by the same date in the first term of his presidency, and President George W. Bush had 130 nominees confirmed.

"The good news is, they are operating under Democrat rules put in place in 2013, so all they can do is slow walk," Pierson said. "Eventually there will be confirmations."

By blocking the nominations, she continued, Senate Democrats think they're "part of the resistance" against Trump, but "in fact, they are wrong."

Many Democrats are saying the real problem is because Trump has not sent over many names, noted show co-anchor Steve Doocy, but Pierson replied that the "math doesn't add up."

"If you are waiting on another 100 to 200 nominees, but still slow walking the 50 on your table, it doesn't matter how many have been appointed," said Pierson. "They are obstructed literally by causing obstruction committees . . . the only people it's hurting are the American people.

"Even in blue states, people voted for Donald Trump. They wanted to get affordable healthcare. They need tax reform. They need relief from this country. That's what they are slow-walking."

She also said she believes that as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republicans are in charge of the Senate, they should be able to work more quickly, and Trump would agree.

"I think the president would agree that the Republicans need to get a little bit more aggressive at pushing these measures through," Pierson said. "At the same time, there are rules that are in place and the Democrats are using those rules to slow walk it.

"They have this gentleman's code in the Senate and Republicans are finding out that they're not going along to get along like they have been so long."

Trump himself tweeted on the topic Tuesday, blasting Senate Democrats for moving slowly in a tweet posted shortly after Pierson's interview aired. He also retweeted a link to the Fox News story.
