Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu said Monday that the hosts of Sunday political commentary shows "are surrogate sponsors ... of the Democratic perspective," The Hill reports.

Sununu, also the former chief of staff to President George W. Bush, went on Fox News to address President Donald Trump's lawyer, Jay Sekulow, who on Sunday morning went on a spree of television appearances to discuss Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer.

"What they wanted to do with Sekulow, going on all the shows, the shows in which virtually all of the hosts are surrogate sponsors, if you will, of the Democratic perspective," the former governor said.

According to Sununu, Sekulow "said, 'Look, tell me which law, which rule, which regulation, which statute there's supposed to be a violation of.' He, in essence, probably should have emphasized that, in my opinion, by saying, 'Put whatever scenario you want on that meeting, and tell me even with the hypothetical scenario, what violation should be given to [special counsel] Robert Mueller to investigate for that meeting.'"

Part of Sekulow's defense of Trump Jr. on ABC's "This Week" was that if the meeting was "nefarious," then the Secret Service, who at the time were not protecting the then-candidate's son, would not have allowed it.

"Donald Trump Jr. himself said things should've been done differently," Sekulow admitted. "Having said that again, none of that is [in] violation of the law. That's more process."
