Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who fiercely campaigned for the White House against President Donald Trump and other GOP contenders in 2016, told attendants at a hedge-fund conference the president needed to stop tweeting, The Washington Post reported Friday.

In a speech to the SkyBridge Alternatives Conference in Las Vegas on Friday, Bush was responding to a question about whether or not he agreed in the naming of a special prosecutor to investigate possible Russian involvement in last year's presidential campaign.

"Yes, I think we need a special counsel, and I don't [think] the president should tweet," Bush answered.

"There is a reason why he tweets, which is to go around the press and directly communicate with millions of people, and he is effective in doing that. I don't want to diminish that because that is an important tool that presidents now have," he added.

However, Bush maintained the tweets had an effect on his staff, saying they "countermand the efforts of a lot of people that are trying to keep up with him." He also explained the focus of the Trump White House on issues in the media caused officials to live "in the tyranny of the moment," The Hill reported Friday.

Bush defended Trump and the barrage of media assaults that are at many times hostile to the president and his agenda and are often based on leaks within the administration.

"I've never seen a White House as leaky as this one," Bush said. "People should be fired if they're disloyal to the president of the United States and leaking."
