House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa is the richest member of Congress with a fortune amounting to at least $355 million.

The California Republican, who is doggedly investigating a number of scandals engulfing the Obama administration, claimed the top spot this year on The Hill newspaper's annual 50 Wealthiest List.

Texas GOP Rep. Michael McCaul was ranked by the newspaper in second place, with a net worth of around $101 million, according to finance disclosure reports lawmakers are required to file every year.

Overall, Republicans account for 29 of the top 50 lawmakers on The Hill list, with 37 from the House and 13 from the Senate. Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, however, was ranked as the third wealthiest lawmaker with a minimum net worth of $88.5 million.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee, reported assets of around $2.3 million, while conservative rising star Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz reported a minimum net worth of roughly $1.5 million.

Two of the leading potential 2016 GOP presidential contenders reported more modest holdings. According to disclosure reports analyzed by The Hill, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is worth a minimum of about $455,000, while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has a negative net worth of around $190,000.

Issa made his fortune as the founder of several companies that supply alarms and security systems to car manufacturers. He reported several investment funds, some of which are worth more than $50 million each, as well as real estate properties worth millions.
