House immigration reforms that include amnesty could hinder Republicans' chances to regain the majority vote in the Senate, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz says, even though Republicans are now poised to retake control in November.

"I think the odds of [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid remaining majority leader would jump tenfold, Cruz said during an event hosted by Politico Thursday, The Washington Post reported.

The breakfast event, held at the Newseum in Washington, allowed Cruz to criticize the news media, while defending New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and calling the Bridge-gate scandal "nonsense." He also slammed President Barack Obama's foreign policy and Reid's lack of movement in stimulating job growth.

Tea party favorite Cruz said if the midterm elections were held today, Republicans would take over the Senate. But if GOP leadership in the house "abandoned their principles," Republican efforts could be derailed, Cruz said.

"The way you win elections is you give people a reason to vote," Cruz said. "And taking principled stands is the way you do that."

Cruz, who criticized GOP Senate leaders for allowing Democrats to pass the debt ceiling increase without attaching spending cuts to the bill, still says all Republicans should have voted against passing the legislation.

"The debt ceiling debacle illustrates everything that's wrong with Washington," Cruz said.
However, he would not directly criticize Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and refused comment on the contentious elections McConnell or Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, face this year.

"I'm likely going to stay out of Republican primaries," Cruz said, not answering questions if he'll pick a tea party-favored candidate over Cornyn. "That's between me and the ballot box."
