House GOP Campaign to Oust Holder Gains Strength

Thursday, 20 Jun 2013 04:05 PM

By Dan Weil

The push by House Republicans to get rid of Attorney General Eric Holder is growing stronger, with a majority signing a petition asking that he leave office.

Since June 1, 66 GOP House members have added their signatures to Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar's resolution demanding that Holder leave office. He has 122 co-sponsors, more than 50 percent of all Republicans in the House.

The snooping by the Justice Department on Associated Press and Fox News reporters has helped spark support for his legislation, Gosar told The Hill.

"Americans have lost faith in our chief law enforcement officer. He's contradicted himself in front of Congress," Gosar said.

Gosar offered his resolution in January, largely in response to the Justice Department's disastrous "Fast and Furious" gun-tracking operation. Gosar offered similar legislation last year.

Republican Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, who heads the Judiciary subcommittee that will consider the proposal, is one of the co-sponsors. But the legislation's fate is unclear in the House, and it would certainly be rejected in the Democratic-controlled Senate. No Democrat has supported Gosar's effort.

The New York Times reported earlier this month that some White House aides also would be happy to see Holder go.  "The White House is apoplectic about him, and has been for a long time," an anonymous former Democratic official told The Times.
