Democratic congressmen are beginning to bow to the inevitable — that they’re unlikely to regain control of the House in November’s elections.

At the party convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, Democrats are saying that it would be a victory just to cut the GOP’s 25-seat majority in the lower chamber, Politico reports. For months Democratic heavyweights have acknowledged that dynamic in private, but now it’s coming out in public.

“We’re going to win seats,” Pennsylvania Rep. Allyson Schwartz, head of candidate recruitment for House Democrats, told Politico. “The question is: How close can we get? Can we win the majority? . . . If we do a really good job, we have a shot. It’s not easy, but we have a shot.”

Heavyweight New York Sen. Chuck Schumer voiced a similar thought to Politico. “I don’t think it’s lost, but it’s an uphill fight. They would admit that,” he said, referring to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chairman Steve Israel, D-N.Y.

Republicans, of course, aren’t surprised by the development. “It makes sense that the DCCC’s chief recruiter is less than confident about her party’s chances of returning Pelosi to the speaker’s chair,” National Republican Congressional Committee communications director Paul Lindsay told Politico. “After all, she’s met and worked with House Democrat candidates first-hand and knows how truly pitiful they are.”

The admissions carry more meaning coming at the party convention, where party leaders are trying to inspire the grassroots. Ironically, the negative sentiment about the House could boost President Barack Obama and Democratic Senate candidates, drawing donors to them who otherwise would have given to House candidates.
