House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said on Thursday that legislators might be forced to cancel their September recess to work on a government funding bill.

"Members are advised that pending ongoing discussions on the continuing resolution, the House may be in session during the week of Sept. 23 and possibly into the weekend," the Virginia Republican said on the House floor, according to The Hill.

"Members should expect an announcement next week regarding when the House would meet during the week of Sept. 23," Cantor said.

The federal government will shut down on Oct. 1 if Congress fails to pass a new funding measure, but Cantor did not indicate whether Republicans would make that deadline.

House GOP leaders were seeking to pass a short-term spending resolution on Thursday, linking it to language that would defund Obamacare next year. That resolution was pulled from consideration this week by House leaders, however, so they could focus on rallying support for the spending bill.

Many Republicans criticized the plan for making it too easy for the Senate to ignore Republicans' demand to defund Obamacare, the Hill reports.
