Republicans fared poorly with women voters in the 2012 presidential election, and a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee and Maggie’s List, a political action committee aiming to help elect conservative women to Congress, said it is vital to turn that around in 2016.

The GOP showed “a terrible lack of ability” to persuade minority women and unmarried women to their message, Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., tells Newsmax TV. “In fact,” she said, “these are just the people that would benefit from economic freedom and the principles of the Republican Party.”

On another subject, Lummis said President Barack Obama’s record of transparency is the exact opposite of what he promised when he first took office.

“He said one thing and does another.”

Lummis, a member of the Oversight and Government Reform committee, said the issue of White House transparency is pervasive. “It’s everywhere from the military, our drone policy, to very basic climate science . . . fast and furious was an example of lack of transparency, the Benghazi cover-up was a lack of transparency, it goes on and on.”

Lummis’ committee also has looked into the salaries of federal employees. She tells Newsmax that federal salaries are so out of proportion that the private sector is at a competitive disadvantage. Taxes paid by the private sector fund those salaries.

With almost 8 percent unemployment, she said, “This is not the time to provide this tremendous incentive to bulk up federal employment at the same time we essentially penalize private sector employment with higher taxes.”

Lummis opposes Obama’s $3.77 trillion budget proposal because it raises taxes on the middle class.

“(W)e raised taxes on Jan. 1 when the largest tax bracket received a tax increase. There was an increase in the estate tax, there was an increase in the capital gains tax, and there were 20 new taxes in Obamacare that took effect also in January that are just starting to hit the American people.”

On immigration reform, Lummis stressed the importance of skilled workers, especially in engineering and the sciences, to keep America competitive, as well as skilled healthcare professionals.

“So there are good reasons that we need to reform our immigration policies,” she said. “At the same time we have got to secure our borders. So I am with those people who say first we secure the borders, then we expand legal immigration and make that system work better, and lastly we address people who are here illegally.”
