A hefty 70 percent of Americans believe Republicans are out of touch with the concerns of most citizens, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll
conducted April 11-14.
Only 23 percent of the 1,003 respondents surveyed think the GOP is in touch with the mainstream views of most of the nation.
Democrats fared somewhat better; 51 percent of survey participants said they were disconnected from the mainstream, while 43 percent said Democrats are not out of touch.
President Barack Obama was rated about the same as his fellow Democrats, with 51 percent of respondents saying he understands their concerns and 46 percent saying he doesn't.
The survey also found that 35 percent of Americans back the current government spending cuts, while 57 percent are still opposed to them.
On gun control issues, 86 percent of respondents said they would support a law requiring background checks for gun show and online gun sales, while 13 percent were against them.
The Post/ABC poll also measured depth of views on immigration, finding that 62 percent of respondents support giving undocumented immigrants the right to live here legally if they pay a fine and meet other requirements. Thirty-four percent, meanwhile, said they were against giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.
