Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who originally supported Newt Gingrich for president, formally endorsed presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney Monday.

“If things had worked out, I would have been very happy and honored to support Newt, but it never really got to that point,” Giuliani told “Fox and Friends” Monday, The Hill reports

“But I think that Mitt has won fair and square, and he’s proven that he’s the most effective Republican. He’s taken on everybody and won an incredible number of primaries. He’s got the resume and the background for the job.”

Giuliani said Romney will carry the day on the most important issue of the fall campaign — the economy. “This is going to be an election about the economy, and if you look at the Republican field and Democratic field, who better to carry our banner?"

Giuliani, when he was backing Gingrich, blasted Romney as a flip-flopper. In December Giuliani told MSNBC that Romney is “a man without a core,” “a man without substance,” and “a man that will say anything to become president of the United States.”

But Giuliani said Monday that he was just defending Gingrich “at a time when he was under unfair attack.” The former mayor also said there is little difference between the views of Gingrich, Romney, and former candidate Rick Santorum on the economy.
