Mitt Romney didn't have the ability to win in the presidential election against President Barack Obama, says Romney's primary rival Newt Gingrich.

"He didn't have the personality, and he didn't have the ability to take on a guy the caliber of Barack Obama and win the campaign," Gingrich said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."  Gingrich is currently co-host of CNN's revamped "Crossfire."

Gingrich says he talked to one of the authors of "Double Down: Game Change 2012," so he expects to appear in the upcoming book. The book by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann looks back at the 2012 presidential campaign.

Asked by "State of the Union" host Candy Crowley how the book is likely to portray the relationship between himself and Romney, Gingrich replied, "Probably close to nonexistent."

"We fought a very hard fight. And I was very clear about what I thought about his tactics," Gingrich said. At one point, Gingrich accused Romney's campaign of having no principles.

"And I think, in the absence of a enormous financial advantage, he wouldn't have been the nominee."
