Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich says he believes the GOP will win a House seat in true blue Massachusetts in 2014.

Speaking ahead of the Republican National Committee's summer meeting in Boston Wednesday, Gingrich, when asked about the state of Republicans in Massachusetts, told Boston Herald Radio, "I have a hunch we're going to pick up at least one seat in the U.S House," adding, "They can grow a very healthy party and be competitive."

Massachusetts has not sent a Republican to the House of Representatives since 1994 when Peter Blute and Peter Torkildsen each won a second term. Both were defeated in the 1996 elections.

At the last election, only the Bay State's 6th District, was competitive with Richard Tisei coming within 4,000 votes of unseating Democrat incumbent John Tierney. Republicans failed to field a candidate in two seats and Democrats won the other six by at least 26 percentage points.

Gingrich also said a potential gubernatorial primary between former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and businessman Charlie Baker, the Republican nominee for the position in 2010, could be a boost for the GOP.

Gingrich did not rule out his own bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, but said he is not "focused" on the issue.

In the meantime, he is the new co-host of CNN's "Crossfire," which starts Sept. 16.
