Rep. Phil Gingrey is expected to announce next week that he will seek the Georgia Senate seat being vacated by fellow Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss, several senior GOP strategists said on Thursday.

“I've just talked to two people that told me Phil Gingrey is actually calling them telling them he's going to run — and his staff is telling people he'll probably make his announcement sometime next week,” Tom Perdue, a top Georgia Republican strategist who is close to Chambliss, told The Hill. “He said it on a conference call with about 12 people.”

With an announcement, Gingrey, 70, would join Rep. Paul Broun as another GOP contender for the Senate seat.

Chambliss, 69, will retire at the end of his term.

“I know the people on [Gingrey's] team, and he's 100 percent in," another Georgia Republican official told The Hill. The person asked not to be named because the congressman has not officially declared his intentions. “He's looking for a full-time campaign manager right now, has direct mail and Internet folks lined up — he's full steam ahead.

“His conversations are all that he's 100 percent in,” the person told The Hill. “The chances of him running are 100 percent."

Even one of Gingrey's children “on her Facebook or Twitter said her daddy is running,” Perdue told The Hill.

And, another top Georgia Republican, when asked if Gingrey would run, told The Hill in an email, “Yes. He's in.”

But, officially, Gingrey has not made a final decision, a spokeswoman said.

“The congressman is still testing the waters but remains encouraged by the feedback he's receiving,” the spokeswoman, Jen Talaber, told The Hill.
