Former Virginia Republican Sen. George Allen is scouting out campaign headquarters in Richmond, reaching out to party activists and business leaders, and interviewing staff as he gears up for a george, allen, virginia, senate, electionrematch with Sen. James Webb, D-Va. Allen, who lost his seat to Webb in 2006, is expected to announce his candidacy next week, the Washington Post reports.

The son of legendary NFL coach George Allen is hoping to reclaim the glory of his first two runs for statewide office in the 1990s when he won the governor’s seat and defeated incumbent Sen. Chuck Robb, D-Va. Allen was widely expected to win reelection to the Senate and was discussed as a possible presidential nominee when he was undone by the use of an alleged racial epithet at a campaign event.

The road ahead will not be easy and will be marked by primary challengers claiming the conservative banner. The chair of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation, Jamie Radtke, is already in the race for the GOP nomination and three others have expressed interest, the Post reported.

Allen rejects the moderate label, telling the Post, "I know my record. It's one of a conservative in Congress." Allen is currently crisscrossing the state with the group Americans for Prosperity. A stop in a suburban restaurant in Richmond drew about 100 people and had the markings of a campaign event, the Post said. So far, he is telling supporters to “stay tuned.”
