Ari Fleischer: Trump Hiring Family Members Is 'Messy'

Fox News' "Happening Now"

President Donald Trump hiring family members as advisers is "messy," former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Monday.

"Presidents have the right to pick whoever they want as advisers, and there's a lot of benefit to having somebody the person is comfortable with," Fleischer told Fox News. "The problem is when that person you're comfortable with is a family member, it really does have the tendency to gunk up the works.

"If something goes wrong, how do you deal with that person if they're a family member, if they're a close relative to the president. How do you chastise them? How do you discipline them? How do lawyers separate what that staffer is doing from the president? It can lead to many complications."

Trump's daughter, Ivanka, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are advisors to the president. Kushner is under scrutiny for his connection to Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer and the digital campaign he runs for the president. He has had to add to his security clearance form twice to note unreported meetings with Russian individuals, and calls for him to lose that clearance have mounted as congressional investigators probe whether the digital operation he runs for Trump coordinated efforts with Russian bots to spread fake news about Hillary Clinton during the campaign.

Fleischer said Kushner and Ivanka Trump have served the president well in giving advice, but that the situation is still "messy."

"When you have somebody who is a family member and other people in the White House have a disagreement with that person, you're no longer disagreeing with a co-worker, now you're disagreeing with the president's daughter," he said. "It's tricky."
