Jenny Sanford: I’m a Long Shot for SC Senator

Jenny Sanford says she’ll “seriously consider’’ stepping in for resigning Jim DeMint, but South Carolina’s former First Lady believes there’s a slim chance she’ll be tapped to fill his Senate seat.

“I would consider myself a long shot,” Sanford told The State newspaper.
Gov. Nikki Haley is scheduled to announce the appointment at 12 noon on Monday.

Sanford says she was “honored’’ to be included on the short list of finalists for the seat, which include U.S. Reps. Tim Scott and Trey Gowdy, former state Attorney General Henry McMaster, and state Health and Environmental Control Department Director Catherine Templeton.

“Prior to this opportunity, I was not contemplating a run for office. This is different. It’s an appointment,’’ the ex-wife of former Gov. Mark Sanford told the newspaper.

The appointee will assume the post next month when DeMint takes off to run the Heritage Foundation.

Sanford’s marriage to Mark Sanford ended in 2010, a year after it was revealed he was having an affair with an Argentinian woman while governor.
“I understand the rigors on public officials,” Sanford told The State. “I have life experiences that make me suited to handle the challenges.”
