A 58 percent majority of Americans don’t think spending cuts should be linked to an increase in the debt limit, while 36 percent say the issues should be tied together,
according to the Washington Post.
Republicans in Congress don’t want to grant Obama an increase in the debt ceiling without spending cuts. And the president wants the issues to be handled separately.

Even among Republicans only a 48 percent plurality wants the two issues to be linked, while 45 percent want no linkage.
A total of 49 percent of respondents say they have more trust in Obama on the issues of the debt ceiling and spending cuts, while 35 percent have more confidence in congressional Republicans.
