Sen. Perdue Predicts Win for Handel in Georgia Race

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

Georgia residents are recognizing what President Donald Trump has done for the United States, and most likely, they'll choose GOP candidate Karen Handel in Tuesday's special election Sen. David Perdue said Monday.

"He won the state and this district," the Georgia Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.

"I believe Karen will win. She is from that district, and nobody knows the district better than her."

The hotly contested race was made necessary after former Rep. Tom Price resigned to become Health and Human Services secretary. The race for the district seat is being widely seen as a referendum vote on the presidency, and has become the most expensive race for a House seat in American history.

Handel is facing Democrat Jon Ossoff, who has come under scrutiny for living just outside the district. He has said he just lives a few miles away and plans to return when his fiance finishes medical school.

Ossoff is slightly ahead of Handel in the polls, but if he wins, it will be a "wake-up call," said Perdue.

"President Trump did not come to Georgia and campaign," said the senator. "We advised him not to do that. He didn't have a chance to defend himself against accusations that were made. This is not a referendum on Georgia.. It is not moving to a blue state. I believe this election will prove that Tuesday."

Perdue also talked about the work returning Washington to regular order, such as balancing the nation's budget.

"This budget process is broken," said Perdue. "We've had 178 continuing resolutions. They hamstring our military. We only have 37 working days between now and the end of this fiscal year. Guaranteed we won't have regular order appropriations. We've only averaged two-and-a-half a year in the last 43 years to fund the government. We should appropriate 12 appropriation bills every year."
