Voters appear more inclined to throw Republicans out of Congress than Democrats, according to the latest CNN/ORC poll in the wake of the 16-day government shutdown.

The survey of 841 adults found that 75 percent of respondents believe GOP members don't deserve re-election, while 54 percent said Democratic incumbents don't deserve another term.

But when asked how they might vote in 2014, survey participants said they would choose a Democratic candidate for Congress over a Republican by a 50 percent to 42 percent margin.

That 8-point margin for Democrats over Republicans was similar to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, which gave Democrats a 9-point advantage in next year's congressional races. It also mirrored polling results from Democratic-leaning surveys.

"Although incumbent members of Congress of both parties are not very popular, the shutdown seems to have only affected views of GOP incumbents," observed Keating Holland, CNN's polling director.

For example, the survey conducted Oct. 18-20 found that 42 percent of respondents believe Democrats should be re-elected while just 20 percent said the same thing about Republicans.

As for all incumbent lawmakers, the CNN/ORC poll revealed that more than seven in 10 respondents believe most them, regardless of party, don't deserve re-election. At the same time, four in 10 said their own representative didn't deserve another term.

According to CNN, both those figures are close to all-time highs.
