Capitol Hill has become an "evidence-free zone, with ideology trumping everything else," former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has charged.

"In Washington we’ve seen what happens when politicians choose scorched earth over ground," she said during a speech at the University of Buffalo Wednesday.

Clinton was likely alluding to conservative Republicans’ insistence on defunding Obamacare that helped cause the government shutdown, although she made no direct mention of the tea party.

The former first lady also did not allude to any potential bid to get back to the White House, this time as president. When asked what the ideal presidential candidate would look like she said, "I’m not as interested as to what the candidate looks like as what the candidate stands for – what the candidate really believes America needs to be for the future, particularly for young people," Clinton said.

The next president must "isolate the extreme voices and allow the vast majority of American voices to be heard," she said.
