Jeb Bush Cracks 2016 Joke

Former Republican Florida Gov. Jeb Bush poked fun at presumed White House ambitions Tuesday night — both his own and those of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Presenting the National Constitution Center's 2013 Liberty Medal to the former first lady and ex-Senator from New York, Bush slyly alluded to key states in the presidential nomination process.

"Hillary and I disagree about a few things, but we do agree about the wisdom of the American people — especially those in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina," he said, according to Talking Points Memo.

"Former Secretary Clinton has dedicated her life to serving and engaging people across the world in democracy," Bush said in a statement to the Christian Science Monitor about the award. "These efforts as a citizen, an activist, and a leader have earned Secretary Clinton this year’s Liberty Medal."

But as Clinton took the stage in Philadelphia to accept the Liberty Medal — and to urge the audience to be active citizens — chanters outside yelled, "Hillary Clinton — hands off Syria" as the Democrat took the stage, the Inquirer reported.

Acknowledging the protesters, she remarked: "We are experiencing . . . freedom of speech."
The event took place on the eve of the deadly attack on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi that left four dead.

And critics were quick to note an irony in the presentation.

Talk show host Rush Limbaugh, when the award was first announced, responded: "What in the name of Sam Hill…?"

And the National Review’s Jim Geraghty questions whether this "pretty much destroys the 'Jeb Bush 2016' talk."

"If Jeb Bush didn’t want to run for the Republican nomination, he could have just said so," Geraghty wrote.
