Tea party Republican Ken Buck is making a second attempt to represent Colorado in the U.S. Senate, after failing to win what was considered a winnable race in 2010 due to a series of embarrassing gaffes.

Buck made the official announcement in an email to supporters Monday night, saying he is prepared to run against Sen. Mark Udall after winning a battle against cancer, The Hill reports.

"Thank you for the prayers, cards, emails and kind thoughts while I battled the lymphoma cancer found earlier this year," Buck says on his campaign website. "With that battle behind me and after prayerful consideration, as well as the encouragement of my family, friends, and supporters across Colorado, I have decided to run for the U.S. Senate."

Buck went on to call Democrat Udall "one of the most reliable rubber stamps for President [Barack] Obama's failed policies," adding that "Colorado needs a U.S. Senator that will fight back in Washington, not capitulate to the big spenders."

According to the Denver Post, some political observers thought Buck, the current Weld County District Attorney, would make a run for Attorney General rather than the U.S. Senate.

While running against incumbent Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet in 2010, when GOP candidates were winning nationwide, Buck deflated his own campaign with remarks comparing homosexuality to alcoholism and for suggesting during the GOP primary that he should be elected over fellow Republican Jane Norton because he doesn't wear "high heels."

At least two other Republicans have also announced their intention to challenge Udall — state Sens. Randy Baumgardner and Owen Hill.
