Massachusetts GOP Sen. Scott Brown leads his Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren 50-44 percent among registered voters, according to a new UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll.

Among likely voters, Brown’s lead is more narrow — 49 to 45 percent. The survey, conducted Sept. 13-17, has a 5.5 percentage point margin of error. It contrasts with four polls released earlier in the week that showed Warren with an average lead of 4.25 percentage points.

The survey indicates 57 percent of registered voters view Brown favorably, up from 48 percent in December. And his unfavorable rating has declined to 29 percent from 35 percent. Brown also has the support of 22 percent of voters who say they will vote for President Barack Obama.

Meanwhile, 48 percent of voters view Warren favorably, up from 34 percent in December. But her unfavorable rating has risen to 34 percent from 27 percent. And 30 percent of registered voters label her views as “too liberal.”

The poll found no evidence of a post-convention bounce for Warren, but it did indicate that almost one-third of Brown’s supporters my change their mind before the election, compared to just 19 percent for Warren.

Brown leads among independents 58 to 35 percent, and he has a 20-point lead among men. Warren has an 18-point advantage among women.
