A group of retired military officers met with Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday to discuss how the White House can better reach the public on its push for gun control.

“The vice president has a great overview of all these issues,” Retired Army Brig. Gen. Stephen Xenakis, a former Army physician, told The Hill. “He has a plan and he’s working with leaders in Congress to get it done. He’s got great instincts on this.”

Xenakis added that the administration will try to win public support for background checks on private gun sales as well as for imposing a limit on the number of bullets that a firearm can hold, and banning future sales of assault-style weapons.

“The vice president understands that when it comes to communicating with credibility on guns, the two groups with the most credibility are law enforcement and military officials,” Xenakis explained. “We have experience with both having weapons and using them responsibly, so we can get that message out.”

One of seven former military representatives at the meeting, Xenakis said he plans to push the president’s gun-control agenda directly to the public from time to time, having already appeared in a Web ad released Monday by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

“When I look at the courage you’ve shown, it’s incumbent on politicians to show some political courage too,” Biden told a group of Newtown survivors last week, The Hill reports. “If you’re concerned about your political survival, you should be concerned about the survival of our children.”

The Senate is expected to begin marking up a handful of gun control bills later this week, according to The Hill.
