Political observers in Michigan say Rep. Justin Amash, a 32-year-old libertarian who is also a friend and follower of Sen. Rand Paul, may run for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Carl Levin.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Amash may make a bid for the seat, although he has not yet filed to run in the Republican primary. Amash, who is the son of Palestinian immigrants, won a seat in the state legislature in 2008 immediately following graduation from Michigan Law School. He was first elected during the Republican landslide in 2010, representing west Michigan’s third district and was re-elected in 2012.

Amash gained notoriety last year when he was among the House Republicans who launched a failed attempt to overthrow House Speaker John Boehner earlier this year.
