Big Dollar Ad Campaign Targets McConnell

By Courtney Coren   |

Two Democratic groups are spending more than $250,000 on ads aimed at ousting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in the 2014 Kentucky Senate race, Politico reports.

Senate Majority PAC and Patriot Majority USA launched a television ad Thursday that goes after the Kentucky Republican's long career in Congress.

The ad repeats a sound bite of McConnell saying, "I've lived on a government salary for 30 years."

It includes details about his record, such as his vote to raise congressional pay, his vote for the financial bailout, and his vote for cuts to Medicare.

"Mitch McConnell has long ceased to serve the state," the ad reads, according to an editorial in The Louisville Courier-Journal.

"As a top Washington insider, Mitch McConnell has left Kentuckians' interest behind and voters need to know his true record," Rebecca Lambe, co-chair of Senate Majority PAC, said in a statement.

"By acting as a roadblock for job creation, investment in education, and giving law enforcement the tools they need, McConnell has proven he has forgotten the people of the Commonwealth," she added.

The two groups said they expect to keep their ad attacks on McDonnell until the 2014 election. They plan to use mailers, email, social media, and stand-alone websites to help make their case against the GOP Senate leader.

McConnell's campaign responded, portraying the ad campaign as a "desperate" move by Democrats to go after anyone who opposes President Barack Obama, Politico reported.
