Just 16 percent of Republicans believe that President Barack Obama will be re-elected, while 59 percent nix his chances at another term, according to a new IBOPE/Zogby Interactive poll.

Barack Obama, zogby, re-electionBut among those Republicans who say Obama will gain another term in 2012, almost 60 percent say the president will win because the GOP doesn’t have a candidate now who can beat him.

Overall, 47 percent of the respondents, including 80 percent of the Democrats and 39 percent of the independents, said Obama will be re-elected, according to the Utica, N.Y.-based pollster.

Just over 40 percent of the 2,245 likely voters in the May 27-31 poll said the president deserves re-election, and 48 percent approved of his job performance. Voters who believe Obama will be re-elected are split on the question of whether he will win because he has done a good job or because Republicans do not have a candidate capable of defeating him.

Obama's approval rating has held at 48 percent since May 9. It moved up from 41 percent to 46 percent immediately after the U.S. mission that killed Osama bin Laden on May 2.

Approval of congressional Democrats went up four percentage points since May 23, landing at 35 percent. Approval of congressional Republicans went down four points over the same time, settling at 28 percent. Overall approval of Congress is 18 percent, down one from May 23.

The percentage saying the nation is headed in the right direction is 29 percent, down two points since May 25. Almost 60 percent say the nation is headed in the wrong direction.
