The Whig Party, which went extinct during the Civil War, is back in Nevada and being recognized as an official minor party that’s open to registrants and ballot access.

The Modern Whig Party of Nevada is essentially one man, the Las Vegas Sun reports, but the man, Jim Bacon, a 59-year-old software engineer who came to Nevada from California five years ago said he thinks the Whig philosophy “is a natural fit with Nevada’s streak of libertarianism.”

Bacon admits to having only about 50 people in the state who are interested, but he’s linked to a national movement of Modern Whigs. They claim to have chapters nationwide, although not all of them are officially recognized as official parties.

The Whigs were last prominent from the 1830s-1850s, and were formed to oppose the politics of President Andrew Jackson.

Bacon says the Modern Whigs’ most important issues include education, investments in infrastructure, and the military, and a tough stance on tariffs, saying that they should be raised the same level the United States pays to export items.

Four U.S. presidents, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Millard Fillmore were Whigs while Abraham Lincoln had roots in the party.
