Former Virginia Gov. George Allen has a new ad denouncing his U.S. Senate opponent, Democratic incumbent Tim Kaine, for supporting the Obama administration’s decision to block the Keystone XL pipeline.

“It really shows how out of touch with reality these folks in Washington are whether it’s Tim Kaine or the President,” the Republican Allen told Newsmax.

The ad admonishes President Obama for 35 months of high unemployment rates. The spot also cites several media sources that questioned the decision to delay or deny construction of the oil pipeline.

Story continues below the video.

Allen, noting that gasoline prices are near record highs for the winter season, said: “The average family, especially if they are in urban or rural areas, this is quite a hit.”

President Barack Obama and supporters such as Kaine missed an opportunity to cultivate a truly comprehensive energy strategy.

“Our country needs to be in control of our own energy destiny. And we ought to be unleashing our own energy resources,” Allen said.
