Republican Louisiana Rep. Vance McAllister's self-funded election campaign is heavily in the red,  Politico reported.

McAllister, who made his money in the oil business, took out personal bank loans to cover the cost of last November's special election which brought him into office. Most wealthy candidates usually lend their campaigns money and pay it back from subsequent contributions rather than borrow from banks, according to Politico.

The congressman initially said he would not be a candidate for re-election following the appearance of a video showing him kissing a married campaign staffer. Now he says that he would "do whatever it takes" to win. McAllister announced that he would start raising campaign funds and put in his own money as needed, the News Star reported.

Politico reported that he had about $8,000 in his war chest as of March.

It is not known if McAllister has repaid any of his debts from the last campaign. He reportedly owed Louisiana's Community Trust Bank in Monroe up to $500,000. He also owes tens of thousands of dollars to political consultants and operatives, according to Politico.

He will be opposed in the 5th Congressional District by Republicans Ralph Abraham, Harris Brown, Ed Tarpley, and Zach Dasher, who is connected to the "Duck Dynasty" family. Also in the race is Libertarian Clay Grant.

Among those weighing a run are Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, a Democrat; State Sen. Mike Walsworth, a Republican; and Democratic state Rep. Robert Johnson, the News Star reported.
