Romney Endorses Tillis in NC Senate Primary Race

Monday, 05 May 2014 11:11 AM

Mitt Romney has endorsed Thom Tillis on the eve of the U.S. Senate primary election in North Carolina.

On Monday, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee announced his support for the state House speaker in Tuesday's crowded GOP field.

Romney says in an email message that Tillis is a conservative who solved problems while in Raleigh and that he thinks Tillis would do the same in Washington.

The endorsement is the latest to reinforce Tillis as the favorite of the Republican establishment. The endorsement also contrasts him with obstetrician Greg Brannon, who urged people in 2012 not to vote for Romney. Brannon called him too moderate. But Romney won the battleground state of North Carolina over Democrat Barack Obama.

Eight Republicans are seeking the party's nomination in Tuesday's election.
