Senate Hopefuls Collected $500K a Day Last Year

This year's Senate incumbents and hopefuls collectively picked up more than a half-million dollars a day last year, signaling 2013's off-year cash boom will spell never-ending campaign ads, mail and phone calls this year.

Democrats on the ballot in 2014 raised more than $108 million last year, besting Republicans' $87 million. Incumbent Democrats outpaced incumbent Republicans in fundraising by more than 2-to-1 and outspent incumbent Republicans by almost 3-to-1.

Heading into this election year, though, both parties' candidates have roughly the same amount banked, around $80 million.

Thirty-five Senate seats are up for grabs this year, and Democrats will be defending 21 of them. Republicans need a net gain of six seats to wrest the Senate from Democratic control.
